Listening First: The Compassion Behind Our Chronic Illness Hotline

Living with chronic illness, injury, pain, disability, or neurodivergence can be profoundly isolating. Whether you’re grappling with an invisible illness, enduring the lasting effects of an injury, navigating a new diagnosis, or living with pain that the world can’t see – your experience matters. And you deserve support.

Our upcoming Chronic Illness Hotline by Project Build exists for one simple, powerful reason: to provide emotional care and connection for anyone whose life is shaped by health challenges. Whether you are seeking answers, clarity, comfort, or simply a place to feel heard without judgment, we are here for you. And although we haven’t launched just yet, we are actively fundraising so we can be here for everyone who needs us.

In the spirit of transparency and trust, we want to share a little more about how our hotline will work and why we believe it’s urgently needed.

No Two Journeys Are the Same

First and foremost, we recognize that no two individuals share the same experience, even if they carry the same diagnosis.

A person living with fibromyalgia may experience it entirely differently from someone else with the same condition. Two people with ADHD might have dramatically different strengths, challenges, or co-occurring conditions. Someone with a rare disease might find themselves constantly educating others, while another might be misdiagnosed for years.

Why? Because each person’s journey is shaped by a wide range of unique and deeply personal factors:

  • Individual symptoms
  • Quality of medical care and access to it
  • Cultural background and communication style
  • Emotional responses
  • Financial limitations
  • Family dynamics
  • Support networks or lack thereof

At the hotline, we meet every person where they are, as they are. Whether you’re in crisis, confused by a recent medical conversation, or just needing someone to listen: we’re here.

Information, Not Interrogation

If you reach out to the hotline for information about your condition, clarification of medical advice, or help finding resources, our team may gently ask a few clarifying questions to better support you. But here’s what you should know:

📲 You are never required to share your medical details.

We fully respect your privacy, autonomy, and boundaries. Support is not conditional on disclosure.

📲 We don’t diagnose. We listen.

We are not a substitute for professional medical care. What we do provide is compassionate emotional support, peer-informed insight, and the validation that your experience is real and deserving of care.

Compassion First, Always

Our hotline will be staffed by trained Compassion Counselors, empathetic listeners who are equipped to support people from a wide range of backgrounds and health conditions. But no one knows everything.

If a texter shares a condition that a counselor isn’t familiar with, we consult a trusted, clinician-reviewed database to gain a general understanding. This helps us hold space with more accuracy and care. That might mean learning about:

  • Symptom progression
  • Typical or potential pain levels
  • Whether the condition is life-limiting or terminal
  • Common co-occurring issues
  • Emotional and practical challenges that often accompany the diagnosis

This background allows us to better listen without assumptions, respond more thoughtfully, and validate what you’re going through in a more meaningful way.

And when we do ask clarifying questions, it always begins with this foundation:

We are here to listen, with compassion and care.

Why This Hotline Needs to Exist

There are many services available for mental health, suicide prevention, and crisis intervention. These are essential. But millions of people living with chronic health conditions or disability exist in a space that is often overlooked: a gray area between survival and thriving, between diagnosis and full treatment, between “you don’t look sick” and debilitating pain.

These individuals are often:

  • Misunderstood by friends and family
  • Invalidated by medical professionals
  • Overwhelmed by inaccessible systems
  • Burned out from self-advocacy
  • Isolated in their suffering

We believe no one should face this alone.

This hotline is not just about empathy. It’s about equity. It’s about filling a critical gap in the support landscape, one that millions fall through every day.

We’re Building This Together

As of today, our hotline is not yet live but we are working tirelessly to launch it. That includes building partnerships, training our counselors, and fundraising so we can create a safe, sustainable, and inclusive service.

If you believe in this mission, we invite you to help us bring it to life. You can:

  • Donate, if you’re able
  • Share our story with your community
  • Volunteer your skills or lived experience
  • Follow us on social media to stay updated

Most of all, we ask that you help spread the message: everyone deserves to be heard, especially when they’re struggling with their health.

You Are Not Alone

Whatever you’re going through, whether it’s pain, uncertainty, grief, frustration, or fear, you’re not imagining it, and you don’t have to go through it in silence.

We see you.

We believe you.

And soon, we’ll be just one message away.
